This year’s program recognized a total of 49 applicants, almost double the number of schools that participated last year.  On May 4, 2011, the winners of the third annual Green Schools Recognition Program were announced at a catered luncheon held at the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties’ downtown West Palm Beach headquarters. The program’s highest honors went to Jupiter Middle School of Technology, who earned a cash award of $2,000. A private school, St. Andrew’s, received $1,000 for placing second and Roosevelt Middle and Bak Middle School of the Arts, who tied for third place, each received $750.

Palm Beach County’s 2nd Annual Learn Green Conference and Expo recently took place at Palm Beach Central High School. This one day conference and exposition for schools, presented by Audio Enhancement, provided more than 700 participants the opportunity to learn from each other as well as from community and green school experts.

Teachers, students, administrators and community members attended more than 50 sessions ranging from the Green schools recognition program, Careers in the green world, Creating wildlife habitats using native plants, NOAA’s response to the BP deep water horizons oil spill and even guided tours of Pine Jog Elementary School.

Keynote speaker Jim McGrath, Executive Director and Founder of National Green Schools Network, encouraged everyone to continue their green efforts and the become advocates in their schools, homes and communities.

According to Joe Sanches, Chief of Facilities at the School District of Palm Beach County, “the event was a huge success and we are very happy to see that our teachers, administrators and even students are taking advantage of this learning opportunity. Our main goal is to provide a rich curriculum to the students and encourage the community to become more environmentally aware.”

Additionally, 65 exhibitors shared their expertise in the Green efforts including: Audio Enhancement as the presenting sponsor, The School District of Palm Beach County Facilities Management, Florida Power & Light, Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County, Advance Roofing, Turner Construction, Shoes for the Cure, Wisch & Jackson, Hedrick Brothers Construction, The Education Foundation of Palm Beach County, FAU/Pine Jog Environmental Education Center, Palm Beach Central High School, Whole Foods Market Wellington, Profits Plus, among many others.
